Union soldier's war-date battle letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Marcus Walker, Co. E, 141st New York Vols., "Near Atlanta, Ga., Aug. 2, 1864," to his parents, reading in part: "-we have had another hard fight since I wrote - it occurred on the 20th of last month in which Col. [William K.] Logia was killed - the Lt. Col. [Andrew J. McNett, Brevet brigadier general], Major [Charles W. Clanharty] and adjutant [1st lt. Louis J. Hazard] was wounded. We have not got a field officer left. A captain is in command of the Regiment. We lost in killed and wounded 72 - the Regt. is reduced to about 100 guns. We are now laying facing the rebus within 3 or 4 miles of Atlanta. We occasionally play a Yankee trick on them. The morning we advanced our picket line and our division took 114 prisoners that was the most of their picket line. They fight a good deal with artillery here. Don't do much hurt but make a good deal of noise - George Roberts is doing picket duty on the railroad at Dalton - Otis Cabin is the Capt's cook. He does not carry a gun - we are going to whip the Rebs so they will stay whipped this summer - I want to see old Abe president for the next 4 years. If he is reelected you will see this thing settled as it should be - Marcus Walker." The original "Due 3" transmittal cover is included with endorsement reading, in full: "Soldier's Letter. No money but plenty of Hardtack & shells." Light toning, else near fine.
