Union soldier's war-date siege of Atlanta letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on "U. S. Christian Commission" stationery, by Pvt. Marcus Walker, Co. E, 141st New York Vols., "Near Atlanta, Ga., Aug. 14, 1864," to his parents, reading in part: "-do not know how soon we will take the city - we shell the city a good deal. Have thrower nearly 2000 shells from one hill close by our Regiment and bursted two 20 pound guns. The Rebs don't shell us much now. Some of the prisoners say that we are using their city very hard. Good enough for them. They must dig out avoid it - I see that we differ in political views and think you put a wrong light on the subject. Not that I am a nigger head for I am not, but believe in crushing this Rebellion. There was a time when the Southern Confederacy could have come back and had their slaves, but that time is past. They would not do it and it became a Military necessity to do it (free the slaves). I for one hate the nigger as bad as anybody need to - as far as that alone was concerned I would not fight for them one minute to free all in the South. But in the meanwhile it is weakening the rebus. Old Jeff says that we must acknowledge them as a free government or completely exterminate them. I prefer the latter course. Leave them neither root nor branch for they are not fit to live and surely not to die so I do not know of any place suitable for them. Somebody ought to have stopped Old Payne's mouth when he made that expression in the store - if there had been some soldiers there that I know he would would stood a fair sight to got his nose nocked , but enough of the nigger - Mark." The original transmittal cover is included. Light toning, else near fine.
