Union soldier's war-date letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Marcus Walker, Co. E, 141st New York Vols., Atlanta, Ga., Sept. 11, 1864, to his parents, reading in part: "-we have not had a mail for about a week. The railroad has been cut somewhere and they have not got it repaired yet. We have got Atlanta at last. Our Corps marched into the city the 2d of this month. Our Corps has not had any fighting since I last wrote you. The Rebs destroyed a good deal of stuff before they left. They burnt 4 trains of cars and a rolling mill close to where we lay. The train was loaded with ammunition etc. The city has been a nice place - most very house has been hit by a shell. The citizens had holes dug to get into and covered with dirt. Gen. Sherman has issued an order that the citizens must leave the city. All that [are] Secesh [and say] their main dependence is in the South. He makes them go south and the balance north - Capt. Townsend is acting brigade commissary now - Marcus Walker." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Light toning, else near fine.
