Union soldier's war-date letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Marcus Walker, Co. E, 141st New York Vols., "Camp Ambulance Corps, Atlanta, Ga., Oct. 25, 1864," to his parents, reading in part: "-there has been no forage through the railroad in some time. We have to go foraging to get grain for the teams - we make the old Secesh look down the mouth sometimes and take everything that they have got that we can find. Our Corps is all the troops here at the city. The rest of the army is - between here and Chattanooga. The Rebs are trying to tare up the railroad and starve us out of this place. But old Billy Sherman is back there and if they do it they will be 'right smart, I reckon' (Southern phrase). I don't know but I might as well say something about Election [and] think Old Abe stand a good site. Little Mac did not hoist the right colors. If he had he would run well. Abe will beat him all to pieces in the army. For my part. I don't care but little who is elected. If I was a voter would voted for Abe - Alexander Atherton got commissioned in a Colored regt. if so what is his rank and what Regt. Have you heard anything more from Jim Miller concerning that revolver. We have not got any pay yet. Some of the Regts. have been paid - the last of this month they will owe us 10 months. I think Dan paid pretty high for a sub[stitute]. But it clears him for three years. He can afford it for a soldier's life would not suit him - Mark." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Light spotting, else near fine.
