HOOPER, WILLIAM (1742-1790). A Signer of the Declaration of Independence from North Carolina, Hooper began as a lawyer and was elected to the Continental Congress in 1774. He was not present when the vote for independence was taken but signed the Declaration of Independence. He later served in the North Carolina legislature and recouped his personal fortune, which was damaged when the British invaded North Carolina. Scarce partly printed ADS "W. Hooper", 1.5pp, oblong 8vo. Salisbury, North Carolina, September 5, 1773. "To the Coroner of Rowan County, Greeting. We command you as before that you take the body of John Oliphant it to be found in your Bailiwick & him safely keep so that you have him before our Chief Justice…at the Court-House in Salisbury on the 5th day of Mar. next, then and there to satisfy Richard Farr the Sum of seven pounds twelve shillings & eleven pence…" On the second page Francis Lock, the Coroner, has noted and signed, "not found per me". On this side, which has been folded for filing, Hooper has listed the plaintiff's and defendant's names, the place and date, and signed W. Hooper. This portion of the paper has light brown stains, but the writing is dark and clear. Brown at folds.
