c. 1760-80 18th Century, Colonial to Revolutionary War Era, Four-Button Brass Gang Casting Mold, by Nathaniel Miller Hallmarked with his initials: "NM", Very Fine. This very rare Revolutionary War era Button Mold is made of Brass. Compared to Bullet molds, Button Molds are significantly more rare. This example measures approximately 5.5" in length x 1" wide x 1" tall. Typically wooden handles would be placed on the brass tapered portion long ends (handles not present). Local Militias during the American Revolutionary War typically had no official military uniforms and wore plain faced buttons without a specific unit designation. The original Makers Hallmark "NM" punched in the brass on the reverse, being Nathaniel Miller, also well known for his brass Button and Bullets molds created during the Revolution. Miller lived in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. During the American Revolution he also made .69 caliber Bullet molds, a typical size used in muskets of the period and the imported French muskets of that time and caliber.
