Benjamin Stoddert (1751-1813) Officer in the Revolutionary War, 1777-1779; severely wounded at Brandywine; helped secure land for building the city of Washington, D.C.; first secretary of the Navy, 1798-1801. Autograph Document Signed, "Ben. Stoddard, Pres.", 1p., oblong 8vo, October 1, 1783. To the Justices of the Orphans Court, Washington County. "Augustine Wade, having produced satisfactory Proof, that he was a private soldier in the Maryland Line and that he is disabled by a wound received at the battle of Brandywine on the 11th September 1777. We therefore require and direct you to draw on the Treasurer…pension as you may think sufficient for his Support, not exceeding his half pay, to commence from the time his whole pay ceased, which appears to be was in August 1778." Some light foxing at right. Fine.
