HUGER, Daniel Elliott (1779-1854) was the son of Continental Congressman Daniel Huger (1742-1799). The father had marred Sabrina Elliott (1758-1799), the sister of Morris Jr's wife, Ann B. Elliott. The younger Huger does not appear to have graduated from Yale but rather The College of New Jersey (Princeton) in 1798. He later served as a U.S. Senator from South Carolina (1843-1845). An opponent of secession, he sat in opposition to that state's 1832 nullification convention. The recipient, Lewis Morris IV (1754-1824), served as aide-de-camp to General Nathanael Greene during the Revolutionary War during the critical southern campaigns of 1780-1781. Morris, like his former commander, settled in South Carolina after the close of the war. He served five terms in the South Carolina Assembly (1789-1801) and served as Lieutenant Governors of the state from 1794-1796. The 4pp, self-covering letter, dateline New Port (SC) August 7, 1800, signed "D.E. Huger" and again on the return address ""Dan E. Huger" written to "Col. Lewis Morris, Charleston S. Carolina". In small part, "The fool hardiness of the democrats much pleases me. They are more formidable under cover than in the open field. ... if Pinckney was not returned to the Legislature his friends I trust will show themselves on the approaching election and prove to the world that merit sometimes meets its reward even in Democracies. (i.e.: Charles Pinckney remained loyal to presidential candidate Thomas Jefferson, serving as his campaign manager in South Carolina and helping to carry the state for Jefferson.). ... Mr. Adams .. is extremely unpopular that even his friends despair of his success ... the men of Connecticut have pledged themselves to support Mr. Adams ... this being the case, it is of the utmost consequence that General Pinckney should be supported in S.C.. . To do this effectively it will be necessary to keep out of the Legislature his enemies ... Major Butler will be dangerous in the Legislature if chosen elector he will vote for Jefferson & Burr ... I should address each of them on this subject of endeavor to rescue my Country from the evils of a Jacobin ..."
