Hardbound Book, "THE BLACK PHALANX; A History of the Negro Soldiers of the United States in the Wars of 1775-1812, 1861-'65" by Joseph T. Wilson, published by American Publishing Company, Hartford. This book is rebound, ex-Library stamp Xavier University Library. Contains 56 illustrations. The author, Joseph T. Wilson (1837-1890) was born free in Norfolk, Virginia. During the Civil War, Wilson served in two African American regiments, the 2d Louisiana Native Guard and the famed 54th Massachusetts. He was seriously wounded during the Battle of Olustee, in Florida, and subsequently discharged.
