Document, 2pp., datelined, Hd Qrs 1st Military District, Dept S.C., GA., & Fla., Charleston August 12, 1863. In full, Respectfully returned, a look out will be kept every night for the Calcium light and its bearings as exactly as possible taken. By command of Brig. Genl. Ripley, Wm. W. Vance. On the reverse the orders are carried forward, Respectfully refereed to Lt. Seltgood who will order a lookout to keep and take bearings noted ..." A blockade-runner did not often pass through the fleet without receiving one or more shots, but these were always preceded by the flash of a calcium light, or by a blue light; and immediately followed by two rockets thrown in the direction of the blockade-runner.
