The front panel of a Confederate envelope has a cancellation JUL 25, 1861 PAID and is addressed to "Sergt. Geo. M. Lalane, Palmetto Guards, Kershaw's Regt. SC Vols. Fairfax CH Virginia". On the inside is written in pencil, "Found this in Vienna Va. Sent North by Sergt. Robt F. Smith, Co. K 49th Regt." Smith served in the New York Infantry.
