The latter is datelined Chattanooga Tenn., Oct 5, 1863. In part, "... You have supposedly heard of the great Battle of Chickamauga ... It was the hardest battle of the war. We lost many of men. Jasper Smith was killed. Marion Merk mortally wounded. Bill is missing. George Hope pretty seriously wounded. ... I was barefooted about two months. ... The great battle was fought about 7 miles from Chattanooga. The Yanks had to retreat to Chattanooga where they are at this time. Our men are bombarding the Yankees this evening. ... We are recruiting more reinforcements. I guess we now have about one hundred thousand men ... I understand Bragg lost 12 or 15,000 men killed, wounded or missing. The Yankees much heavier. ... We got about 50 pieces of Yankee artillery and many thousands items of small arms. ... I hope we will be able to cut the Yankees off and starve them out of this place. ..."
