EVANS, Clement Anselm (1833-1911) was a General of the Confederate States Army who commanded infantry in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War. Evans was promoted to Brigadier General in May 1864 (replacing J.B. Gordon who ascended to division command) and was wounded at Monocacy. He commanded Gordon's Division, Second Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, from Petersburg to Appomattox. Evans survived five wounds during the war. GORDON, John Brown (1832-1904) was an attorney, a slaveholding plantation owner, general in the Confederate States Army, and politician in the postwar years. By the end of the Civil War, he had become "one of Robert E. Lee's most trusted generals."Document Signed "C.A. Evans, Brig. Gen. Comdg." on 2pp document datelined Hd Qrs Gordon's Division, December 26, 1864 written to Colonel Taylor. In large part, "I respectfully suggest the following named officers as suitable to constitute the detail for General Court Martial of this division ..." It continues with a listing of ten officers, Regiment, Date of Commission. It is docketed by Gordon on the reverse, "Hd Qrs, Dec.27, '64, Reply forwarded J.B. Gordon, Maj. Gen. Comd". The docketing is light but readable. Minor paper loss at fold.
