A partial Confederate soldier's letter with great content. Pencil notation at top "Aug 8, 91, I think this part of a letter to sister Caroline who was in Ga." In part, "Soon after the two battles, Sheridan extracted out from the Yankee lines with10,000 mounted troops ... His avowed object being to overrun the whole of Virginia tearing up Rail Road, burning bridges, robbing the people ... He got one day the start of us but General Hampton put out after him with about 8,000 Cavalry and we caught him on the 11th June ... about 15 miles North West of Richmond. ... On the first day the fighting was very severe ... we had lost many of our men killed and wounded. On Sunday the 12th, we whipped him badly ... killing, wounding and capturing 2500 of his men. Sheridan lost one half of his horses which put many of his men on foot ... On the 24th June, Sheridan Cavalry again attempted to run us & we met him ... about 25 miles North East from Richmond at a place called Nances ... we put out after a raiding party of Cavalry about 5,000 strong under Wilson ... we came up with Wilson near Stoney Creek, Va, about 45 miles South of Richmond and gave him a most complete whipping killing and capturing about half of his command. ... The pg 2/3 letter does repairable tears.
