Reproduced by Donnelly Deeptone Offset is the most exacting facsimile of Robert E. Lee's surrender order. The order opens with Lee's words, "After four years of arduous service, marked by unsurpassed courage and fortitude, the Army of Northern Virginia has been compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers and resources." Lee then continues to praise the soldiers and define the surrender terms. Lee closes, "With an unceasing admiration of your constancy and devotion to your country, and a grateful remembrance of your kind and generous consideration of myself, I bid you all an affectionate farewell. R.E. Lee Genl." The order is on light blue paper, 8" x 12-3/4," fine. It is presented in a large folder with an eight page summary of the events which is stitched into the folder. Minor stains and slight bump to folder only, circa mid-20th century. We've rarely seen the Donnelly item in its full presentation folder.
