Portrait Showing Miles Wearing his Medal Of Honor, Framed, Extremely Fine. A beautifully executed small size Oil on Board Portrait, artist unknown, measuring 6.25" x 4.5", housed in a simple period wooden frame. This historic post Civil War Oil Portrait shows the Medal Of Honor Recipient, Union Major General Nelson A. Miles in his full military dress uniform. He is shown wearing his Medal Of Honor, earned at the Battle of Chancellorsville in May of 1863. The Civil War Medal Of Honor was authorized by the United States Congress in 1862. It was designed by silversmiths William Wilson & Son of Philadelphia together with James Pollock, Director of the U.S. Mint. There are a few trivial scuffs, overall this painting is in excellent condition with choice eye appeal. Nelson Appleton Miles (1839-1925) Colonel of the 61st New York Infantry during the Civil War, was awarded the Congressional Medal Of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Chancellorsville (May 1863) in which he was severely wounded. Miles was promoted to Major General in 1865 and after the Civil War he commanded United States Army forces in the West during the Indian Wars.
