In struggling from drowning, a Union cavalryman loses his Spencer Carbine and equipment, being a one page, 18" x 7 1/2" sworn affidavit, "Camp 2nd Mass. Vol. Cavalry, near Winchester, Va. Jany. 4, 1865", reading, in part: "…on the 27th day of December 1864 while on the march from Ashby's Gap, Va. to camp…near Winchester, Va. The following Ordnance was lost under the following circumstances. On the 26th day of December 1864 while on the march from the Rapidan river…one of the horses in my company became so fatigued and worn out I was obliged to abandon the horse…leaving Edwin H. Brown, a man of my company, dismounted without any means of transportation. On arriving at the Shenandoah river…Brown jumped onto a horse that had been abandoned by some one for the purpose of crossing the river. When near the center of the river, the water being deep and the current swift…[because of] the feeble state of the horse. He was overpowered by the current thereby immersing both horse and rider…Brown in struggling for life with the water element was obliged to abandon…one Spencer Carbine, One Carbine Sling…Swivel…Carbine Cart. Box…[and] one Cap Box. William M. Rumery, Capt., Co, H, 2d Mass. Vol. Cav. The undersigned being duly sworn deposes and sees that he is cognizant of the facts…and that they are true to the best of his knowledge…C. W. Berry, act 1st Segt. Co. H. Signed and made official by the regiment's adjutant, 1st Lieut. Charles Mason Kinne, who was wounded in the ear during the battle of Waynesborough, Ga., on Sept. 28, 1864. Overall VG.
