A complete and authentic issue of the Gentleman's Magazine, London, February 1778, 48pp., disbound, VG. A lengthy two page letter with deep and detail war movements of General Washington. In part, pg 89, "An Historical Account of the Transactions in America during the last campaign, copied from a letter written at Boston ... In part, "... Gen. Howe found it necessary to collect his army at Brunswick, where being intrenched and covered on all sides, he was in accusible to Gen. Washington ... Although general Howe made use of every possible stratagem to mislead Gen. Washington .....in that vicinity Gen. Washington met & fought the enemy .... we lost the ground, though it was dearly bought by British Blood. By the fairest computation the enemy had 2000 killed and wounded whilst ours ... did not exceed half that number ... matters were now brought to this crisis that Gen. Howe should have the open country & Gen. Washington the city, or the reverse; General Washington chose the country & the command of a fort on the Delaware...The second important action was at or near Germantown, about 7 miles from Philadelphia where the enemy were attacked... some General and Field Officers were killed and wounded on both sides. .... Generals Vaughan and Tryon have lately have gone up Hudson's River with 4000 men ... Gen. Gated having disencumbered himself of his prisoners and detached 4000 men to repossess Ticonderoga ... the enemy were so numerous in that part of America, invested our fort at Ticonderoga ... this important fortress was scarcely attacked before it evacuated ... in an instant was our country laid open to the victorious Gen. Burgoyne and his cruel abettors ... encouraged his savages and Canadians to murder the distressed inhabitants .... The last effort of this baffled army was to attack Gen. Gates army under the command of Generals Lincoln and Arnold; an action which though marked with the unfortunate wounds of these brave Generals, terminated to the honor of the America arms. ... and of the 10,000 men who came out of Canada with him (Burgoyne), fully 4000 were killed, taken and deserted before the capitulation ..."
