A Confederate soldier's 2pp. letter written by Albert M. White to his father. White mustered into "C" Co. NC 4th Infantry, was wounded 7/3/1863 Gettysburg, PA., and surrendered on 4/9/1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA. Datelined Yorktown VA. April 24, 1862, in part, "Our picketts has killed several cows ... they come along the pickett line after dark ... they get lead ... for we can't tell wether it is a cow or a Yankee. ... The Yankees are in sight of our line ... They throw some at us from their gun boats which is six miles off. They throwed one over here that weighed 34 lbs. It went 10 feet in the ground ... We can give them some that weigh 140lbs ... What firing has been done, the report says that we lost only 26 men killed and about 90 wounded. The enemy lost about 600. ... There was one man frightened to death by the report of the cannon. He was a little unwell and was in a dose of sleep and the enemy started a balloon up close to the line. Our men fired on it, and this man sprung up and fell back dead. They made the balloon come down in a hurry. ...."
