An Autograph Letter Signed "A. B. Lawrence, Acting Chief Quartermaster of the Army of the James". This is written on official "Office Chief Quarter-Master, U.S. Forces, Appomattox, Va. May 11, 1865. In full, "This is to Certify -- That the Confederate note hereto attached is part of the funds of the Army of Northern Virginia surrendered by Gen. Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House April 9, 1865, and was receipted for as such on account of the disbursing officers of that army.
