He was wounded 4/2/1865 Petersburg, VA and discharged on 5/28/1865. Datelined Camp of 141st reg Pa Vol., Near Fredericksburg, VA, Nov. 24, 1862, to his brother with original cover. In part, " We are now laying opposite Fredericksburg, one mile from the river,. The Rebel Army are lying on the other side ... They are from one hundred to one hundred fifty yards apart in plain view and good range. The army are said to be twenty thousand strong. But I think they are stronger. Commanded by D.W. Hill and Longstreet, they intend to oppose our crossing at this point. Col. Watkins, Lt. Mercur and myself rode up the bank yesterday withing a hundred yards of their picketts for a mile ... we were in plain sight and good range, but they did not offer to fire on us . We shall in all probability attempt to cross during the week. If so we will come in for our share of the 'Shell and Shot' as we occupy ground immediately in front of the town ....'
