A Union soldier's 4pp. letter written by George A. Spencer who on 9/15/1862 mustered into "I" Co. RI 7th Infantry and was Mustered Out on 6/9/1865. Datelined Camp 7th R.I. Vols, Near Lexington KY, Dec. 23, 1863, writing to his parents as shown on the enclosed original cover. In part, "An orderly came up from town with orders for us to be ready to march immediately . We were very much surprised ... we had made up our minds to stay here till Spring. ... I don't know where we are going but expect to the front. We will start tomorrow at 4 O'clock in the morning....I guess it is about the Rebels making a stand around the Cumberland river. Our Regt and A Regt of Cavalry and 3 pieces of Artillery ... Since writing the above, I hear we are going to Knoxville Tennessee. I don't know anything else. ... PS, Don't go worrying about me. PSS. Our Captain had got to town to buy some turkeys for Christmas when the orderly met him and told him he had marching orders.
