Union soldier's 2pp letter on both sides of the Chester Hotel & Mining Company Stock Certificate, written by Horace Sisson who enlisted 8/12/62 into K company NY 1st Mounted Rifles. Dateline; City Point Va., May 11/64. In part, "I have never yet had to write you under such unfavorable circumstances ... we went onboard the transports last Thursday and arrived at City point Friday noon. ... Last Saturday we had a fight and drove the enemy four miles tearing up the Richmond & Petersburg railroad and cutting the telegraph wire. O... Our Regt had the advance on Saturday and ran into an ambush of two regiments of the Rebel infantry, but luckily for us they fired too low and only wounded a few men ... On Monday we had another battle within a mile or two of Petersburg and drove them. Yesterday they opened on us on the extreme right wing and a severe fight broke out, but in four hours, they broke and ran ... Never since I have been in the army have I had shells burst and bullets buzz so close to me, but our kind Heavenly Father has seen fir to spare me thus far, while so many hundreds have fallen .... On Monday we destroyed all the public property at Chester Station ..."
