A rare war-date 1p. 4to., manuscript circular issued by the Army of the Potomac's Commanding General George B. McClellan, Sharpsburg, [MD.], Sept. 22, 1862 to 12th Corps ordnance officer, Lt. Gilbert Elliott, reading, in part: "Division ordnance officers will as soon as possible report…with a list of the kind, quantity, & caliber of small arms ammunition…required to bring up the supply of their division…". After America's bloodiest day, McClellan sought to bring his army back up to fighting condition. Interestingly, Gilbert Elliott would be killed in action while in command of the 102nd New York during the battle of Lookout Mountain, Nov. 24, 1863. Very good.
