Stanhope inserted in a civil war era Minie-ball showing black and white scene of Pickett's Charge. Caption reads: "Gen. Hancock at Gettysburg Pickett's Charge" Scene is similar, but not identical to, Peter Rothermel's "Battle of Gettysburg" commissioned by the State of Pennsylvania and finished in 1871.A severe wound caused by a bullet striking the pommel of Hancock's saddle, entering his inner right thigh along with wood fragments and a large bent nail. Helped from his horse by aides, and with a tourniquet applied to staunch the bleeding, he removed the saddle nail himself and, mistaking its source, remarked wryly, "They must be hard up for ammunition when they throw such shot as that."
