War-date Southern plantation owner's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Bella Stuart, Chantilly, [Va.], April, 1861, to her cousin, and George Washington's grand nephew, John A. Washington, as owner of Mount Vernon, interestingly Washington would died later that year in western Virginia while a member of Robert E. Lee's staff, in part: "…we heard to-day the (to us) sad news that Arthur had gone to Fort Pickens. His company having been ordered there. I trembled at the reflection that the best & noblest are…to be taken away…it would be selfish not to yield him unless willingly when so many others are making like sacrifices and when ever can commit him with perfect confidence to he core of our heavenly Guardian…Bella Stuart."
