A rare "stereotype" Union soldier's Civil War-date, ca. 1862 clay pipe bowl of the bust of a young African-American male slave/freeman! Many Union soldiers purchased patriotic pipe bowls. They proudly flaunted their allegiance, but very few would dare show their siding with an abolitionist! While the war raged and the destruction of slavery loomed when these pipes were produced by a few bold soldiers and their existence today recalls a time when slavery was the law of the land.
