Newspaper broadsheet, an authentic issue of the Tri-Weekly State Gazette, Austin, Texas, September 18, 1863, minor tear upper right. Then an extraordinary article describing the occupation of New Orleans, 2-1/2 columns. In part; "We find the negro here is as free as in Boston ...We see daily negroes placed on the witness stands of the Provost Court .. respectable white ladies are convicted of seditious language upon evidence of their former slave servants ... a reigning belle was fined $50 upon the evidence of a n......r wench, that she was playing Bonnie Blue Flag on her piano ..." The Yankees auctioneers sell weekly large amounts of goods ... splendid pianos bid off at $25 ... One of the saddest sights .. is the practice of negroes upon an equal with whites. We find negroes dressed in complete US Army uniform ... The guard house is filled with soldiers belonging to the Corps D'Afrique ... The negro officers are the most overbearing and insolent devils one can meet ... their insults to the wives and sisters of Confederate soldiers ... blood boils in my veins ..".....From the front page is a patriotic call to arms, signed in type by Major general Magruder. In small part, "Almighty God in his divine mercy has given us another signal victory over our enemies. ... Men of Texas, I know I do not call upon you in vain. Shall it be said that your State was invaded and you hastened not to the aid of your brethren in the field? Let the mothers, wives, and daughters of Texas, remembering the outrages and tyranny their sisters of the South have met at the hands of the fore, urge every man to do his duty and tarry no longer from the field. ... Old Texans, men of the days of '36, men of the Republic, you have grasped the rifle and rusty knife before at the call of danger. Come now, and the men who love you for your deeds of valor, the youths who would emulated your example, will follow you. Many of your comrades are in the ranks. Form with them a wall of fire and steel against which the foe shall press in vain. ... Ad for NEGROES FOR SALE FOR CONFEDERATE MONEY.
