A good U. S. President Franklin Pierce Content letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Maryland politician JOHN TRUMAN STODDERT (1790-1870) former U. S. Congressman from Maryland and War of 1812 veteran, Alexandria, Va., March 22, 1853, to Doctor C. Graham Brown, reading, in small part: "…I am anxious to escape from this…office-begging & political jugglers. It amuses whilst it disgusts and would leave an unsophisticated mind puzzled to discover how a man can be, at the same time, both a good character & a bad character…I was kindly received by the President and had a private audience with him. I found him unchanged in the great features of his character & am satisfied that he is disposed to conduct his administration on high & manly principles-circumstances may lead him into error, but not [by] his intentions or any narrow views. He may be betrayed by his friends but has [we have] nothing to fear from his energies. Some anxious developments have come to my knowledge…for the nomination for governor…Key, I am told is [too] get the catholic vote of Baltimore & Mitchell the Irish…M' share will be small, if Key commands all the former. I have found some men very…disposed to trust me with their friend's secrets. I would amuse you if we were together. R. J. Brent is quite in a fever & some others I could name. Sally is…hard to manage, being evidently of the opinion that her gr' ma. & myself were only made to pleasure her wishes…it is [an] epidemic among the juveniles…J. T. Stoddert…". The original postal transmittal leaf remains attached cancelled, Alexandria, Va., March 24, 1853, with "paid 3" markings. Overall VG.
