VALLANDIGHAM, Clement Laird (1820-1871)A prominent leader of the anti-war "Peace Democrats" (or Copperheads), Vallandigham was arrested on May 5, 1863, and charged with "publicly expressing…his sympathies with those in arms against the Government of the United States." Upon his conviction, the Lincoln administration banished him to the Confederacy. Free Frank "C.L.
