SWAIN, David Lowry (1801-1868) was the 26th Governor of North Carolina from 1832 to 1835. Document Signed, 10" x 12-3/4", "D.L. Swain" on an Appointment To Justice of the piece for William Fennell of New Hanover County, December 26, 1835, with full seal, VG. In 1865, Swain helped negotiate the surrender of Raleigh to the forces of General William Sherman, and, following the end of the war, advised U.S. president Andrew Johnson on Reconstruction policies.
