War-date Union Autograph Letter Signed “Esther Craig” 4pp. octavo, October 23, 1864, and reads in part: “...Leslie Martin is quite anxious to get the appointment of Ass. Surg. in the 66 Reg if that vacancy be not already supplied. He designs going in the army as soon as he graduates and would very much like to get near you. Capt. Ferguson of the 45 is at home perfectly used up has been in hospital a long time presume he will resign. The next in command of company A would be Cyrus Ballon of Fonda who was unfortunate enough to be taken prisoner at Deep Bottom and is now on Belle Island....There is a strong feeling here about the election the unterrified are doing their best to remove the ‘usurper Old Abe’ and the Union men are determined to reelect him if possible. It seem to be undecided about Pennsylvania the home vote undoubtedly went Democratic but the army gave a large majority for the Union. Without a doubt the next election will be a successful one for Lincoln....” Much more about politics. Fine condition.
