Manuscript Document Signed as official by A.A.G. Whiship, 1pp. quarto, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, October 16, 1850, being General Orders No. 33, and reads in part “Brevet Colonel S. Cooper, is assigned to duty as Asstnt Inspector General, in the Western Division, and will report to Bvt. Major General Twiggs accordingly....” Fine condition...plus; Manuscript Document Signed as official by A.A.G. Whiship, 1pp. quarto, Head Quarters of the Army, Adjutant’s Generals Office, Washington, March 26, 1852, and reads in part : “...Brevet Colonel S. Cooper Asst Adjt Genls will complete the inspection of the Western Division directed by the second paragraph of ‘General Orders” No. 45 of 1850 and will proceed upon this duty on the adjournment of the General Court Martial of which he is a member.” Fine condition. (2 items) Samuel Cooper (1798-1876) was a career United States Army staff officer, serving during the Second Seminole War and the Mexican-American War. Although little-known today, Cooper was also the highest-ranking Confederate general during the American Civil War. After the conflict, he remained in Virginia as a farmer.
