Partly-printed Document Signed, "S.L. Lewis" as Maj. & Q.M. on the staff of R.B. Garnett (1861-62), 1p. oblong octavo, Paymaster's Office, Staunton, Virginia, August 14, 1863, and reads "I hereby certify that I have this day paid Benj. F. Turton Sergt. Co. E 1st Regiment Md. Cavalry Volunteers, C.S.A., one hundred & two 40/100 Dollars, amount pay due him from 1st day March, 1863, to 30 day of June, 1863. Rare 'Valley Imprint'. VG. At this time Benjamin Turton was recovering from a severe wound he receive while fighting at Winchester on June 12, 1863. He would return to the service as clerk for Maj. C.D. Hill in the Quartermasters Department.
