A rare Confederate Department of Florida letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by General Baxton Bragg staff member, Major George Garner, Hd. Qrs., [Pensacola, FL], Nov. 14, 1861 to an unknown high-ranking Confederate medical director in response to a letter he wrote to Bragg's headquarters, reading, in part: "Yours of the 12th reached me this morning. I showed it to the general [Baxton Bragg], who has directed, that you make the arrangements proposed and say to Hallenquist to hold on, as he will certainly be promoted. Your department appears to be getting on swimmingly. Dr. [Carey B.] Gamble is discharging by the dozen: poor Florida Regiment, it will be at rest soon under the shady oaks of the Live Oak Plantation, [Leon County, Florida.] I have just published an order for it to move across the bay and establish a camp near "Deer Point." The doctor is delighted at the idea. Lieut. Baker of the Marine Corps has undoubtedly deserted and gone over to the enemy. He has not been [seen] since night before last. He left the wharf at Pensacola with instructions, he said, from Gen. Bragg to make a reconnaissance on Santa Rosa Island: if it was not for the disgrace of the thing, I would consider that he has got rid of him very cheap: poor & [?] fool, he will repent when too late. [For some unknown reason a fountain pen was used to lightly cross-out Garner's commentary on Lt. Baker.] The Mississippians have arrived and taken possession of the whole ground between here and your hospital: fine material. The launches from Ft. Pickens captured some boat up in the sound last night and towed it out this morning. Doctor, will you please…go to A. Simon 93 Dauphin Street, [New Orleans] and buy me two gold stars similar to those he made for Col. [Daniel Weisiger] Adams [of the] La. Infantry [later Brigadier General, C. S. SA.] The price I believe [is] $1.75 each…I suppose that you are authorized to detail some one to purchase medicines for this place and Mobile. Remember me kindly to Major Hallenquist…George Garner."
