Amazing four page handwritten news paper, 4 pp., February 2, 1857, Burlington, Pa., fine. A the top it reads "A Family & Religious News Paper (Semi Monthly)". Titled "The Sun....Vol. 1....No. 1". The first section pertains to religion....the second section pertains to Intemperance....the third section pertains to Romanism....the furth section is titled Triump, and has excellent content...."The election of Senator Cameron (Simon Cameron) U.S. Senator from Pa. is a signal triumph of the Republican Party of this state while NY and Wis. and Iowa have uttered a sane voice against human bondage"....the next section is titled Kansas, and reads "various and conflicting statements are in circulation of this unfortunate Territory. From all of which we condence the following conclusion....Kansas is at present enjoying a state of comparative quiet. But let not Northern men be deceived, it is the policy of pro slaveryism to lay off, and keep dark, and even to appear subdued, sometimes, in the presence of power. The late election has revealed the alarming fact, that there is a north: and before the face of this fact slavery deems it expedient to abate a little of its rampancy, and therefore we fear it is the stillness of the lion just before he springs upon prey, on which Kansas now enjoys". The next section is titled weather....the next section pertains to the death Senator Preston Brooks, who attacked Senator Charles Sumner with a walking stick on the Senate Floor...."Preston Brooks, who had become notorious for his brutal & cowardly assault upon Senator Sumner, died recently at Washington....". The next section pertains to a funeral for a little girl. The last section pertains to poetry. Have never encountered a paper in a hand written format. A rare historical piece.
