Datelined U.S. Consulate Liverpool, August 20, 1862, 2pp. In large part, "A side-wheeled steamer called Columbia .. put in at Queenstown on Thursday ... I understand for Havana. This steamer is intended to run the blockade. She is said to be a very fine Steamer and runs fast ... There is now not much doubt but what the Steamer Bahama which cleared here in so much hurry is to meet the Gun Boat 290 at some place agreed upon. She has the armament and men for her. I doubt now that she will attempt to run the blockade - there is no necessity for her to do it. ... And as soon as she gets them she is ready to commence her operations as a Privateer. She will attempt to capture one of the California Steamers, at least. ... Edwin Hugh pretended to own the Bermuda , pretends to own the Bahama. The registration is in his name but it is owned by Fraser, Trenholm, & Company. During the Civil War, Fraser, Trenholm, & Company acted as the overseas banker of the Confederate States of America, financing the supply of weaponry and essential goods in exchange for cotton, tobacco, and turpentine. The firm participated in blockade running, built vessels, such as the C.S.S. Alabama for the Confederate Navy and encouraged European support for the Confederacy.
