War-date Confederate non-commissioned officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sergeant Major Mann Page [WIA Cedar Mountain, Va., Aug. 9, 62], 21st Virginia Infantry, "Camp 4 miles of Huntersville", [Western Virginia], Nov. 10, 1861, to his uncle, David Copeland Randolph, reading, in part: "…I left Greenbrier bridge camp on the 29th of Oct. and went to Lexington to bring Mrs. Gilham back to see her husband. It took me 7 days to make the trips and a very rough time to Richd. to winter I will want a nice uniform as my present one is out behind…tell Smith to put Sgt. Major's chevrons on the arms of my coat…Mann Page…". Light toning, else VG. 300-500 e I had, but was very glad of the opportunity to leave camp…my trip back to Greenbrier bridge with Mrs. Gilham was great undertaking but I got her over the worse road I ever saw (except Valley Mt Road) safe & sound for which even the Col. seemed very thankful to me for…I am now 4 miles from Huntersville on the Millbrough road with the left wing of our Regt under command of Capt. Clarke [Capt. J. Lyle Clark later major 30th Battalion Virginia Sharpshooters.] We are now waiting for the other wing of the Regt. to join us…we now have our faces towards Rich'd. They have made no preparations to winter now…our officers are making every effort to have us removed from this division of the army and if the powers that be are disposed to [?] I think they will detach us from this command for our poor Regt. has been worked down and so many of our men have had the…measles that [they] will never stand this cold country. We have already had one snow & hailstorm and our tents will not accommodate all the men …I asked Hain Chamberlayn who is now in R'd. to go to Smith and get him to make me a uniform (R'hd Grays) if he has the gray cloth…he took my measure for coat & pants the later part of last April or 1st of May…
