2pp., documenting the 18th century ship: "The United States To Samuel Norris For his Services on Board the United States Row Gallery President Adams From the 1st, of July 1799, to the 19th of February, 1800 @ 10 Dollars per Month Received February 20th, 1800 of John Wilkins Jun Quarter Master General the above sum of 76.33 and one third Cents in full for my Services as a hired Man on Board the United States Row Galley, President Adams; having, signed Duplicates Samuel Norris Witness Sam Henley". Attached with wax seal is the certification that Norris had served time as a Private aboard the ship, that he had been paid and he has received "the whole of his Clothing…Except One Vest & Hatt" and he had Delivered up his arms & accoutrements" Signed by HJB Brevoort, Commander of the US Galley." In 1797 our affairs with the French became so threatening that Congress deemed it necessary to prepare for war, and authorized the building of the Galley "President Adams" at Pittsburgh, built under the superintendence of Maj. Craig. In 1798 it was launched from the Elizabeth Boatbuilding yard. One inch fold separation, small notch at top, light age toning. A most attractive display in Fine condition.
