CHASE, Salmon P. (1808- 1873) was an American politician and jurist who served as the sixth Chief Justice of the United States. He also served as the 23rd Governor of Ohio, represented Ohio in the United States Senate, and served as the 25th United States Secretary of the Treasury. War-date Autograph Letter Signed “S.P. Chase” 1pp. quarto, Treasury Department, February 17, 1862, addressed to General Halleck and reads “ I cannot forbear congratulating you on the splendid results of your genius & courage. The news of Fort Donelson has just reached us...” Fine condition.
