DAVIS, Jefferson (1808-1889). Leader of the Confederate States of America, serving as its President, during the American Civil War, serving as President for its entire history. Previously a Senator and United States Secretary of War under Democratic President Franklin Pierce. Autograph Letter Signed “Jefferson Davis” as Secretary of War, 1pp., December 14, 1853, to R(obert) McClelland, (Secretary of the Interior). Although a former Michigan governor, McClelland was a strong advocate for states' rights, including the right of a state to permit slavery. Davis is recommending a fellow Mississipian for an appointment as clerk to Mr. Cook of Mississippi. In small part, “I believe you would find him a good clerk and it would serve a good political end as showing that we do not go beyond conduct in 1852 and since in measuring the party claims of an applicant. Mr. Cook in 1851 was an ‘union Democrat’ and as such elected to the legislature ....” Clean letter.
