Two complete and authentic issues of The Federal Gazette, Baltimore, July 19th & December 15, 1796, disbound, 4pp., rag paper, VG. Each issue is loaded with Slave Ads. From the July 19th, there are EIGHT ads to include; Runaway Negro Saul, $20 reward, Runaway Negro Thomas, $20 reward, Runaway Negro Soloman, 416 reward, Runaway Mulatto George, $16 reward, Runaway Negroes Sam, Ned, Calo, $200 reward, Runaway Negro Francis, $10 reward, Runaway Negroes Prince and Billy, $50 reward, and Runaway Mulatto Boy Joe, $8 reward. ... plus, from December 15th, Runaway Negro Henry, $30 reward, Runaway Negro Edmund, $30 reward, Runaway Negro Jacob, $30 reward, and Runaway Thief negro Wench Nancy, "handsomely rewarded". On November 1, 1864, after a year-long debate, a state referendum was put forth on the slavery question: although tied to the larger referendum on changes to the state constitution, the slavery component was extremely well known and hotly debated. The citizens of Maryland voted to abolish slavery, but only by a 1,000 vote margin, as the Southern part of the state was heavily dependent on the slave economy.
