A good war-date Confederate cavalry officer's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Capt. Alfred B. Mulligan, [WIA Burgess' Mill, Va., Oct. 27, 64], Co. B, 5th South Carolina Cavalry, Charleston, S. C., May 6, 1862, to his mother, in part: "…my horse came through safely, but was looking wound up, as horse do, after traveling in the cars…I have purchased the house & lot adjoining the one first purchased. Paid…$6000…I don't want anyone to know that I bought the last house to sell. If the war lasts long we will want it for Brother John & Pat's families…say that you are glad I have purchased it so that your Bros. & sons & their families can spend the war with you…while they avoid war…the people, or some of them, in Spartanburg have a way of running down other people's property so as to sell theirs…these two places purchased by me are the very best settled places in the up country. The buildings were all built by Maj. Struble himself & under his immediate superintendence …he is a man of well-know character & has the reputation of putting up good work…A. B. Mulligan."
