Quite rare, and unusual, Stephen Douglas mourning albumen. The image itself measures 1 ¾" x 2 ¼", and is mounted on coated stock. The image was taken by famed 19th Century Chicago photographer J. Carbutt. Around the image it reads "Tell My Children To Love And Be True To The Constitution". The piece also had his date of birth and the date of his death. Douglas, a prominent figure in mid 19th Century politics, is best remembered for his debates with Abraham Lincoln during the 1858 Illinois Senate race, which he defeated Lincoln, and for running against Lincoln in the 1860 Presidential race, which he lost to Lincoln. Along with the image comes a Douglas Free Frank signature. This is the first example of this rare albumen we have seen, and could possibly be the only extant example.
