Original Stereoview Photograph of "Dead" Soldier's at Devil's Den on the Battlefield at Gettysburg depicting numerous "dead" soldier's with rifles taken by photographer Peter S. Weaver of Weaver Bros. Hanover, PA. This wonderful and quite famous, real photo Stereoview is titled on the publisher's label affixed to the reverse "View of Dead at Devil's Den". This outstanding albumen image shows at least 8 "dead" union soldiers scattered around a formation of large rock boulders. There are 2 men dressed in civilian clothing (although one wears a kepi) examining the "dead". Taken on November 11, 1863, by photographer Peter S. Weaver, this wonderful image has been much researched and extensively documented. The image is known in the literature as the "Posed Dead" scene. It depicts Jacob Shenkel and friends pretending to be dead for the camera. Shenkel was a musician with the 62nd Pennsylvania Infantry who helped with the wounded during the battle of Gettysburg. When the Union army left Gettysburg in pursuit of General R.E. Lee, Shenkel was left behind to serve in the 5th Corps hospital, help with the burial of the dead and, later, served at Camp Letterman hospital until his departure on Nov. 24, 1863. The man standing with the wide brim hat is believed to be Doctor Chamberlain and the man with the kepi is Doctor Lyford. These men were of the embalming firm, Doctors' Chamberlain and Lyford. Minor crack to mount u/r, else VG.
