Broadside, 5-1/2" x 8-1/2", titled "Copy of Telegram Adolph Sutro to President Cleveland, San Francisco, June 29, 1894, VG. In large part, "History will record you as the greatest benefactor of the American people if you will recommend by special message to Congress the foreclosure of the mortgages on the Pacific railroads, paying off existing encumbrances, purchasing the roads at foreclosure sale, and falling back on the personal liability of stockholders for deficiencies. The Government must not operate these roads, but hold them as a great national highway for the benefit of the American people - a war measure, as they were intended to be, for the transportation of troops, munitions, supplies, and mail. Then permit all American railroads to run their locomotives and cars on this great highway, starting from the Missouri River, to the Pacific Ocean, under payment of tolls to be regulated by the Treasury Department. ... "Let out the Government transportation to the lowest bidder, and money enough will be made to pay the interest on the outlay, besides giving low freights and fares, and the incalculable benefits resulting from ridding the people of the corruption, the bribery, the enslavement, the evil influence of these giant, corrupt and criminal corporations, and furnishing the Pacific Coast, by one great master stroke, with not one, but half a dozen competing railroads."
