Federal soldier's letter written by James A. Parker, Co. E, 100th Pa Infantry. Parker would be killed seven months later. The 4pp. letter is datelined, Hilton Head, Nov. 20/61, in part "... we are on Hilton Head working the entrenchments. The Rebels had it pretty well fortified but had to leave and leave 30 big Cannon on the fort without spiking them. ... They left everything, dead and usual muskets, knapsacks, clothes, provisions, Negroes and many other things. ... There was eight marines killed on our gunboats in the fight between the US troops and the Rebels at Hilton Head. ... The fight commenced about 10 o'clock and the Stars and Stripes was hoisted about 3 o'clock on the fort.
