Autograph Letter Signed by John J. Russ(xxx sp?) a Lt in the Texas Army, A.A. Q. Master, Ringgold Barracks, Texas, 8p. octavo, July 4, 1861, and reads in part: “...the day that was once hailed, with martial...music & roaring canon, the once glorious Fourth, but how shall we hail or welcome it now, in seceeding from the Union do we leave to them the whole possession of Stars & Stripes, the American eagle, our celebrations...and all. I think not, we will grant them all, even Yankee Doodle ... but as it was who proclaimed ... that unto the earth was born a new nation, a great free people ... have made a second declaration of independence and this day should be doubly honored by the South .. and this time coming out of the furnace terribly refined ... The North can never amply repay the great injustice she has been heaping on us for the last twenty years. She has added insult to injury till forbearance has ceased ... and now calls us traitors and tories for demanding our rights and proclaiming our unconditional independence of her and her influences. ...” He then continues with extensive descriptions of the mountains, the Rio Grande and parts of Mexico he has seen.
