A small group good of four (4) post Mine Run campaign 20th Maine letters, totaling 4pp. 8vo., & 4to., written by Pvt. John Linnekin, Co. K, 20th Maine Vols., Rappahannock Ford, [Va.], Dec. 8, 63", reading, in part: "àwe are a guarding the railroad. It is just such a hole as I thought they could get us into. It is on a hill close to the river and no wood [for cooking of firewood] in a mile of us, but we have a good tentàThanksgivingàI had no pie nor turkey. I was a marching all dayàI was detailed with the wagoner and did not have a hard timeàJohn." The second letter, reads, in part: [Rappahannock Station, [Va.], Dec. 13, 63 "àI will tell you about what kind of a house I tell of stopping in this winter. It is made of logs. It is logged of 3 feet and covered with cloth. It is 12 feet long and 6 wideàtheir is 4 of us in it. We take turns of cookingàit is my cooking day today. We have a fire place and live just like brothersàtheir names are [Daniel Samuel] Baker, Light, and Bosworth. I have not heard from [Samuel] Freeman [DOD 8/31/64, Washington. Buried Arlington National Cemetery, Grave 13-7492] nor Eli for a long timeàJohn Linnekinà". The third letter, [Rappahannock Ford, [Va.], Dec. 21, 63,2pp. 8vo.]àI hope for the day to come when I can come and see you and all of the restà.you had wrote that there had been a man married in your place. A married man is a common thing with usàJohn". The fourth, [Rappahannock Ford, [Va.], Jan. 13, 64, 2pp. 8vo.]àI have been building a chimney to the hospital today. We have not meny sick ones in our Regt. this winter out of 1000àwe have 300 now left and 120 new members from the 2nd Me. J. Linnekin." Three original stamped transmittal covers are included along with several non-military related letters and hair sample. Minor stopping, else VG. (7 letters; 5 covers & 1 hair sample) .
