A complete and authentic issue of The Niles’ Weekly Register, Baltimore, October 19, 1833, 16pp., disbound, VG. From an interior page running 2/3 page, “American Colonization Society,” reports a meeting in New York. Fascinating content includes the Christian backbone behind the society, and the reduction of Africans selling Africans. In small part, “Yet in the small space of eleven years, six villages had been established, six homes of worship erected; and a population of 3500 persons ... not less than 20 ministers. ... A mistaken idea ... that there is a slave mart at Mesurado .. There was one eleven years ago ... but was abolished at the planting of the colony . No slaver now dares come within 100 miles of the settlement. Besides this, not less than 529 naked Africans taken in battle and destined for slavery, have been rescued by the society ...”
